Zusammenfassung: | eng: This thesis deals with two scenic roads which were built in the thirties. The 'Grossglockner-Hochalpenstrasse' (1930-1935) is situated in the Austrian provinces of Carinthia and Salzburg and leads through vast areas of Alpine wilderness. The 'Wiener Hoehenstrasse' (1934-1938) connects the hills (Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg) surrounding the northwestern areas of Vienna. The history of both roads is closely linked to the economic crises of this time and to Austria's shift from democracy to dictatorship. Probably their most important purpose was to symbolize the freedom of Austria as an independent nation in defense against Nazism. The intent was also to attract wealthy tourists and to show the will of the government to fight unemployment. The 'Grossglockner- Hochalpenstrasse', named after Austria's highest peak, offered a plenitude of far reaching views over glaciers and mountains. The idea of freedom, felt by overlooking open landscapes, goes back to Switzerland, a country which used to be quoted as the model of a small, free and independent Alpine state. |
