| Zusammenfassung: | In 1913 Masaryk published a two-volume study of Russian history, religion and philosophy, under the tile Russland und Europa: Studien über die geistigen Strömungen in Russland A Czech version, Rusko a Evropa, appeared in 1919-21. Some suplementary material was added to the first volume of the second Czech edition in I930 The work is a broad panorama of Russian spiritual life in which the Russian 'philosophical' writers, mainly Dostoevsky, are the preferred keys with which to open the secrets of the Russian soul. Masaryk sharpened his own thinking on the contradictions of the Russian developments. He saw the Russian quest for progress hampered by the extremism, typical of the reactionnaries and the revolutionary radicals alike, by romanticism, nihilism, Pan-Slavism and materialism, and used the Russian predicaments to reaffirm his humanistic creed. Appearing shortly before the First World War the work was a significant contribution to the discussion of the European spiritual and political crisis. It includes, among other observations, Masaryk's most outspoken comments on the potential legality of revolution which, under certain circumstances, 'may even become a moral duty'. |
