Zusammenfassung:eng: In 1985 some sociologists of the University of Linz, Austria, initiated an experimental course of project studies for working persons which lasted for 8 years and which was held in two classes. The research work of a graduated assistant of this course describes at first the French model of these studies, the 'Diplome des Hautes Etudes de la Pratique Sociale' (DHEPS); its concept as action research work by working adults in different social areas, who carry out a project, evaluate their findings and theorise them in a final paper; and the methodical basis and the circumstances under which the course in France came into being (chapter A to C). In chapter D and E we learn about the transcription into Austrian contexts: from the pedagogical point of view as a reflection on contents, frame conditions and group dynamic development of the process of education (from reports of the two classes held); from the politico-educational point of view as a description and analysis of the attempt to institutionalize the model in the Austrian college/university training (analysis concerning the written as well as the spoken correspondence with the Ministry of Science). Chapter F shows the situation in life, the social background and working conditions and the needs of the project students concerning education in comparison with other night school students. Well chosen empiric data are evaluated and autobiographic texts of students are analyzed. Finally, in chapter G we learn about the general political situation at the Austrian universities and their development since the 70ies. The project of the University of Linz as a model case concerning limits and horizons of universitary education for adults in Austria is being analyzed. As a conclusion we see three scenarios describing how the experiment, that has not yet got an institutional frame in the college/universitary system, could go on.
