| Zusammenfassung: | eng: The purpose of this study is to measure technical efficiency, economies of scale and scope and changes in efficiency and productivity over time in the Austrian and German insurance industry. These are important aspects of the competitiveness of the Austrian and German insurance companies in the light of the liberation and opening of the insurance markets in the European Union. With the aid of the data envelopment analysis an efficiency frontier has been constructed which is used as a yardstick of productive efficiency. A measure of the progress in productivity is the Malmquist productivity index. The sources of data are the annual statement of accounts of the years 1992 to 1996. As a result, inefficiencies and economies of scale have been found on both markets. The average cost curve appears to be L-shaped in both industries. On the Austrian market, the productivity has risen significantly (about 50 percent) during the examined period, while there has been almost no technical change. The increase is attributable exclusively to efficiency progress. In the Germany, the productivity progress has been 12 % in the same period. There has been a slight decline in efficiency and a moderate technical progress. |
