Zusammenfassung:eng: The main focus of interest of the present study was to record the migration potential in the four Visegrad-countries Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The size of the migration potential, the structural characteristics of the potential migrants, their motives and their expectations from a stay abroad were main research questions. Further topics considered were the migration biography of the potential migrants, their areas of origin and the most popular destination countries. Apart from the migration potential the transnational commuter potential was another important point of interest. The study is based on a wide-ranging empirical survey in the four Visegrad-countries. The sample comprises nearly 4.500 people that have been interviewed with a very detailed questionnaire. World-system-theory, an enlarged push-and- pull-model and network theory serve as theoretical background for the investigation. One of the most important results of the study is that the migration potential of the four countries in question (all of them applied for an EU-membership) is much smaller than those numbers spread at the beginning of the nineties that implied the picture of a new migration of nations. When only those are considered who have already tried to get official entry and work permits the migration potential is about 700.000 people or about 1 % of the over 14 year old population. Only these people can be ascribed to the real migration potential. These figure is however still higher than the Austrian and German legislation - as the two main countries of destination - plan as yearly immigration. To ignore the discrepancy between the real migration potential and the legal migration possibilities politically seems insufficient. This attitude leads either to an increase in illegal immigration or to a general break with the ideals of Western Europe that has demanded the freedom of moving for years.
