Zusammenfassung:eng: Access to the top leadership positions in politics and economy are closely related to the private living conditions which develop and affect men and women differently. Apart from a description of the tension between professional and private spheres of life, the attempts and strategies to find resolution were also examined. 72 Austrian top leaders in politics and economy were asked in questionnaires about their professional and private situations as well as experiences of conflict between the two. In addition, interviews were carried out with 37 of the 72 people surveyed, through which biographical patterns of behavior could be drawn and a life-historical context could be established. The analysis showed clear differences in the existence of beneficial as well as restrictive factors which are rooted in private living conditions. These differences manifested themselves in seemingly trivial matters of everyday life. What the top leaders have in common is that they pay a high price for their careers and experience a great deal of sacrifices in personal time, leisure time, time with their partner and time shared with the children. These outlined personal sacrifices are made up, however, by numerous bonuses such as the social prestige which is associated with the position. In private life a balance to the professional demands is sought. A family can only be experienced as a resource for both genders equally, however, if the family responsibilities are shared. Aside from structural changes connected to private and familial life, the participation in political and economic processes of decision-making plays a key role for both genders in order to be able to accomplish equal opportunities.
