Studies of life and work of a socialist writer' is on a monographical basis a comprehensive stocktaking of an unknown Austrian writer in exile. Besides an introducing part to Bruegel's life and work before his exile in 1934 and methodical reflections on the science of exile literature this thesis describes Bruegel's literary and biographical development in its breaks and caesuras: from his exile in Czechoslovakia (1934-1938) and his journey to Russia (1936/37) until his final exile in Great Britain (1941- 1945). The last decade of his life (until 1955) is also comprehended under the conception of exile, because Bruegel did not return to Austria after the war. The methodical structure of this study is based on the question how the exile influenced Bruegel's literary and biographical development. In this connection the political poetry, which was written as poetry of resistance to Austrian Fascism and National Socialism, is most important. In the center of interest is also Bruegel's writing about the Soviet Union, which ends in an ideological estrangement to the Austrian Socialist Party. Here Bruegel's life and literature is discussed in a context to the history of the German and Austrian exile in Russia. In the chapter of Bruegel's exile in France (1938-41) attention is paid to the strategy of survival and the preparation for the flight to England, in the chapter of Bruegel's exile in London the thesis analyses his short-stories, which were a new literary genre for Bruegel, and his position in the question of the Austrian nation, which was also discussed by the Austrian exile in Britain. Bruegel's life after the World War II was formed by his career as a diplomat in Berlin for the Czechoslovakian government. Here the thesis describes why he did not return to Austria and why he left his job and went to London again. From his literary works in this period his novels are analyzed, for example his anti-Stalinist novel 'The Plotters' (1951), which was published in English too. At last 'The Plotters' are discussed in the context of renegade literature of the excommunistic writers of this time. |
