Zusammenfassung:eng: This study explores social, spatial and gender-specific issues of the usage of public urban space. On the example of eight public open spaces situated in an urban renewal area of Vienna's 'Gruenderzeit' (i.e. the late 19th century) the interaction of space and action of 10 - 18 years old children and adolescents is investigated. Due to social segregation within the city of Vienna the main users of these public open spaces are children of migrants from Turkey and Ex-Yugoslavia. Overall spatial concepts of these parks are not perceptible, they had just been developed using strong functional design concepts. They provide predominantly spaces for sport-activities of boys and male adolescents, mainly used in the planned purpose. The missing spatial differentiation leads to spatial discrimination of non-sport activities. Spaces for communication - used in a broader context - as well as spaces that offer a variety of different uses are hardly existing. This means that adequate spaces for other users, especially girls, are not provided which also explains the lower presence of girls in highly functionalized spaces. Despite disadvantageous spatial and social circumstances of the analyzed public open spaces a potential for improvement of action and space exists. Particularly for small spaces design concepts, which offer a wide range of possibilities for activities, should be found. Spatial improvements concerning quantity as well as quality lead only in connection with a change of migration policies as well as social strategies to an improvement of the living conditions in the explored urban renewal area.
