Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:eng: The thesis provides an historical review of women's station in life and their position in society with regard to the development of the women's movement, feminism, women's rights, suffrage, and the opening of education and paid employment to women, in particular the problematical post war labour-tight economy and women's liberation in Germany and Austria after the First and Second World War. The structural conditions of the time created difficulties for the promotion of equal rights due to the absence of the necessary preconditions-educational requirements, qualifications, equal pay and employment opportunities, participation and codetermination. Postwar social- and employment-policy have mainly been a burden for women due to the unresolved problem of women's dual roles as mothers and paid professional workers. Reflections upon the history of the Postwar period reveal a distinct and sharp picture of discrimination in every respect. In the meantime many demands have been formally resolved, but a lot of effort is needed to transform the traditional dualistic thinking. The thesis also includes a discussion of theories of gender (humans, gender, and nature), and the contemporary problem of gender in the German language.
