| Zusammenfassung: | eng: The Austrian lyrist Theodor Kramer (1897-1958), quite successful in all German-speaking countries in the twenties and early thirties, had to emigrate to England in 1938, the year of 'Anschluss'. Returned to Austria nearly twenty years later, his name had become obscure. Just at present there is growing interest for Kramer's work, comprising a total of about 10000 poems. He wrote anarchic vagabond-songs as well as realistic descriptions of nature and country life and of the killing workaday routine of World War 1. In this study certain apparently conflicting opinions of contemporaries and later interpreters are examined on the basis of concrete poetic material. Though Kramer was a member of the Austrian Social Democratic Party, his poetry is a sociocritical, but not an outwardly political one. He is anti-Fascist, his verses derive from pity for the underprivileged people, but on the other side his work has several aspects in common with the 'Heimat'- (regional) writers of the right. Kramer is Jewish, still he seems rooted to the soil. We can draw certain parallels to anarchism, to Bertold Brecht, Erich Kaestner and the current of 'Neue Sachlichkeit' (new functionalism), however Kramer's poetic character remains complex. He embodies some typical inconsistencies of Austria's First Republic. Without the name of Theodor Kramer and his very special kind of a leftist regional poetry the Austrian literaty history would be incomplete. |
