Zusammenfassung:eng: The Austrian construction industry put effort in internationalization when the world exports in construction diminished. During the 80's the exports of the Austrian construction industry rose from about 1 bill.AS to nearly 4 bill.AS. The improvement in the export performance in this sector was accompanied by the rise of non traditional forms of international trade in the construction industry. On the basis of 19 transactions undertaken by the most important construction firms in Austria the forms of internationalization are described quantitatively and qualitatively. Three forms of internationalization can be observed: barter, counter-purchase und 'Zuliefergeschaefte'. The common characteristic of all three forms is tying of transactions between the exporting and importing partners, meaning for a Western exporter to be able to export to an East European country or developing country he has to agree to buy goods or services from the importing country. The sample consisting of 19 transactions covers about 60% of the Austrian construction exports meaning that 60% of the construction exports were characterized by tied trade. From a theoretical point of view construction exports pose two questions. First, what are the gains from trade in service exports, since construction exports exhibit to a large extent characteristics of service exports. And second, why are there certain forms of internationalization observable in context with construction exports. The analysis tries to integrate the theory on trade in services and game theoretic approaches to explain the observed forms in tied trade. Since the construction industry is a labour intensive industry the question what employment effects result from increasing exports is one of interest. To answer this question for Austria a simulation experiment was undertaken to estimate what the improved export performance of the Austrian construction industry means in terms of employment and whether the employment effect is affected by the characteristic forms of internationalization.
